TItle:  From Cornea to Cortex:  The Journey of Ocular Pain

  • Anat Galor, MD, MSPH, is a Professor of Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (BPEI), University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and a staff physician at the Miami Veterans Affairs (VA) Healthcare System. She directs the Ocular Surface Pain Program at both institutions. Her research focuses on elucidating the mechanisms underlying ocular surface pain, including nociceptive, neuropathic, and nociplastic contributors, and on developing novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Dr. Galor has published and lectured extensively on the role of corneal nerve abnormalities in the disconnect between ocular symptoms and clinical signs, emphasizing the importance of nerve-targeted approaches to individualize treatment. Her work also explores the eye鈥揵ody connection, examining how ocular findings can reflect systemic conditions such as Sj枚gren鈥檚 disease, fibromyalgia, and Gulf War illness. Dr. Galor has contributed to multiple national initiatives in dry eye and pain research, including the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society (TFOS) Dry Eye Workshop II Pain and Sensation Committee and the Dry Eye Awareness Month Congressional Briefing. She is a past President of the Ocular Microbiology and Immunology Group and currently serves on several educational committees within the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
